A blessing for everyone who comes and goes

What the words say

A blessing for the home runs across a pale scroll in this tapestry, its edges curling as if the parchment had just been unrolled. A cross stands beside the opening words, and a small book rests near the end of the text.

The words are in Bulgarian, sewn in dark brown Cyrillic letters. In English, the blessing reads: ‘God, bless everyone who enters the house; protect anyone who goes out of it; and give peace to everyone who stays there. Amen.’ It asks for nothing grand, only for the people of the house as they arrive, leave and stay.

Every letter made of stitches

Rosi kept the colours few and warm: brown for the lettering, ochre and rust where the scroll rolls over, and a soft cream for the background. Every letter is formed in stitches, yet the text reads clearly from a few steps away, and the shading along the curled edges gives the parchment its depth.

By the front door

The tapestry was sewn with 100% DMC threads and is photographed in a brown frame with a narrow gold-coloured inner edge. It belongs by the front door, in a hallway or in a quiet corner kept for prayer, where everyone who comes and goes will pass it.

Because Rosi made it by hand, it is a very personal thing to hang in a home.
