The Last Supper at a long white table

A familiar scene, laid out along one long table.

A band of light across the middle

Jesus sits at the centre of a long table covered in white, with the apostles gathered in small groups on either side. They lean towards one another and reach across the table, and three openings in the back wall look out onto a distant landscape.

The format is long and low, which suits the table running almost from edge to edge. Red, blue and green robes stand out against the dark patterned walls, and the white tablecloth makes a broad band of light across the middle, broken only by small dishes and the apostles' hands.

Things to compare along the table

Below the table, folds of robes, feet and wooden table legs carry the scene down to the tiled floor. Across the whole width there is plenty to compare: faces in pairs, repeated gestures, the fine vertical pattern at the ends of the cloth. The photograph shows the actual tapestry laid out flat.

Above a sideboard

Stitched by hand along its whole length, it is a natural choice for a dining room, perhaps above a sideboard or along the wall where the family gathers to eat.

Rosi stitched only one Last Supper.
