Holding on to the cross as the sea breaks

A picture about holding on while everything else moves.

Waves, wind and broken timber

A woman clings to a great stone cross while the sea breaks around the rock beneath her. Her long hair and red cloak stream out in the wind, and heavy blue-grey clouds fill the sky.

It is a dramatic picture, and most of the drama comes from movement. The waves are full of white spray, broken timbers float near the bottom edge, and the woman's clothes pull away from her body. The cross is the one solid thing in the scene, rising above her with broad, roughly shaded arms.

A single red cloak

Red appears almost nowhere except in her cloak, so she is easy to find among the dark blues and greys. Her pale blouse and blue skirt follow the line of her body as she holds on, and even on the unframed cloth the storm feels heavy and close.

Somewhere quiet to hang it

Rosi stitched this scene by hand. Its strong mood suits a quiet room or a space for reflection, where little else competes with it.

It is not a print, and Rosi made only this one.
