Down the street to the white house

Old houses lean over a narrow paved street in this tapestry of Old Plovdiv. On the left, an upper floor juts out over a doorway reached by stone steps; across the street, a pink house with dark window frames rises above deep eaves.

Plovdiv is a city in Bulgaria, the country where Rosi lives. The street leads back between the nearer buildings to a small white house at the far end. Red-brown eaves and window frames repeat all the way along, the blue decoration above the left-hand doorway adds a bright surprise, and a few patches of green break up the walls and paving.

The same street in reverse

The back of the cloth shows the same street in mirror image, with the threadwork and finished edges in plain view. Comparing the two sides is a good way to appreciate the fine lines of the window panes and the repeated shapes under the eaves.

For a narrow wall or a kitchen

Rosi sewed it by hand. Its tall format and warm, earthy colours make it a natural fit for a narrow wall, a hallway or a kitchen, and it will mean something to anyone who knows the old town.

It is a one-off, and an easy picture to live with.

Do you know Old Plovdiv?

Perhaps you know the old town, or you are just curious about this piece. Either way, you can write to Rosi.
