Carmen under her red headscarf

Carmen, and all the warm colours around her.

The colour gathers at her face

Carmen looks out from under a red headscarf, dark curls falling around her face and over one shoulder. It is a warm portrait, built from reds, golds and the bright white of her loose blouse.

Most of the colour gathers near her face. The scarf, her red lips, the beads at her throat and her gold-coloured earrings all repeat the same warm tones, while the off-the-shoulder blouse lightens the lower half of the picture.

Autumn light behind her

There is no fixed setting behind her. Patches of ochre, cream and brown blur together like autumn light, so nothing competes with her expression. Around the eyes and cheeks, small changes of tone give the face a softness that a simple outline could not.

A portrait for a warm room

Rosi sewed Carmen with DMC floss. The portrait is photographed in a dark carved frame whose curling leaves echo the shapes of her hair and scarf. It suits a living room or bedroom in deep, warm colours, and it is worth seeing up close, where the separate areas of stitching around her face and neckline become clear.

There is only one Carmen, and Rosi made every stitch of her.
