Hardly two leaves the same colour

An armful of autumn branches spills from a round green vase in this still life, and beside it stands a tall glass of red wine. Pale curtains hang behind them, softening the light.

The leaves do most of the talking. Rust, pink, gold and brown overlap in an untidy spray that reaches nearly to the edges of the picture, and hardly two leaves share the same colour. Against all that movement, the vase and the slim wine glass stand still on a red patterned cloth.

Where the 39 colours went

Rosi used 39 colours of thread for this piece, and the number makes sense once you look closely. A single leaf can pass from yellow to pink to brown, and pale stitches along the stem of the glass catch the light the way real glass does.

For a dining room or a warm living room

Sewn with 100% DMC threads, it measures 63 cm wide by 47 cm high: a comfortable size for a dining room, a wall above a sideboard or a living room with warm wooden furniture. It has the mood of a slow afternoon at the end of the season.

Each change of colour in the leaves meant a change of thread, and Rosi made every one by hand.
