Light colours, tiny accents

Mary holds the infant Jesus close in this tapestry, which is designed like an icon. Both wear pale robes, and patterned halos shine around their heads.

A gold and cream arch frames the upper part of the scene, with small lettering in the corners and beside the child's head. Most of the picture is light, worked in cream, white and gold-toned thread, with tiny touches of red and blue in the halos and along the edges of the clothing. Mary's hands support the child near the lower edge, and their faces sit in the open space under the arch.

Two faces up close

The full photograph shows how the ornamental border encloses both figures. In the close-up you can study the eyes and mouths, and the small coloured shapes stitched into the child's halo. Faces this small leave very little room for error, and here they look calm and gentle.
