Room for the water to fall

Water pours over a rocky ledge in several long white falls and crashes into a pool full of foam and scattered stones. Above the falls, a calm lake stretches back towards blue hills.

The tapestry is tall, which gives the falls room to drop almost the full height of the picture. White and pale blue threads against dark grey rock make the water seem to move, and a leafy tree on the right reaches out over the spray. Green branches at the edges soften the steep sides of the gorge.

Still above, foaming below

The two halves of the picture feel completely different. Above the ledge the lake is smooth and still; below it, everything breaks into foam. A close photograph of the back shows the threads behind one part of the falls, narrow light lines alternating with darker rock.
