Built from light and shade

This portrait of Princess Diana is stitched in browns, creams and muted greys, like an old photograph. She smiles with her face turned to one side, and the sweep of her hair and a square earring stand out clearly against the pale ground.

With no strong colour to lean on, everything depends on light and shade. Dark stitches under the hair and around the eyes contrast with broad light areas on the forehead and cheek, and so little of her clothing is shown that the attention stays on her expression.

The quietest of the three

Working in such a narrow range of tones takes patience, and the unframed photograph shows how much Rosi drew out of them. It is the quietest of the three Diana portraits in the collection.

At home with black-and-white photographs

Its soft, neutral colours fit almost any room, especially one with black-and-white photographs or simple, modern furniture.

There is just this one sepia Diana, made by Rosi’s hand.
